Extremely Chronic Whiners
Posted by: FP Everywhere you look, people are upset. People are complaining left and right. People are unhappy with what they get week in and week out. No, I'm not talking about the price of gasoline; I'm talking about many columnists and fans complaining about the state of ECW. Many people are disturbed over the fact that Extreme Championship Wrestling has too much influence from Vince McMahon and are now calling it "WWECW". People in its hometown of Philadelphia even chanted "This show sucks" due to a bikini contest and Paul Heyman cutting a promo. People are upset that the Big Show is now the ECW champion and is the only wrestler to hold the WCW, WWE, and ECW heavyweight titles. More people are livid that Sabu submitted to John Cena at Vengeance and did so in less than ten minutes. I will try to break down separate beefs here, and then hopefully I can come up with a solution to the problem.
1) Vince McMahon has turned this into "WWECW"
Now let me get this straight. Vince runs this, not Paul Heyman. Vince funds this, not Paul Heyman. Everything goes through Vince for the final say. I would love to have Paul Heyman as a creative guy or booker or writer because that is what his strongest attribute is (and his mouth). I know everybody wants every match to be an Extreme Rules match, which helps wrestlers like Sabu and Balls Mahoney, but not every ECW match has to contain violence. Unfortunately, Dean Malenko, Chris Jericho, Lance Storm, and Eddie Guerrero (RIP) are not with the program to give us technical classics. I have not seen Jerry Lynn yet either. As the late Gordon Solie said, "The name on the marquee is wrestling." Having the bikini contest and Heyman talk at the Philadelphia house show really upset the fans there, and they allegedly beat up a John Cena fan, which is completely unnecessary. Then again, Mick Foley did call them "heartless" and "bloodthirsty" and "insensitive" in his first book. He also called them "demanding", so I can understand that. Promos and T&A are not what the old ECW was about. Since ECW does not have scheduled pay-per-views as of this moment, Taipei Glass matches and Stairway to Hell matches probably are not best suited for television. Call it a hunch. You do have the ECW champion on every week and in a wrestling capacity, so that should be a bonus. D-X hasn't wrestled the last two weeks on TV, even though they will be on Saturday Night's Main Event. The solution then is to have ECW matches with their old "rules", but it can't be done due to TV and Vince making it clear that the matches will not all be under "Extreme Rules" conditions.
2) Is there too much Kelly?
While there will always be hope of a nip slip, we all know that Kelly is unable to expose her breasts on national television, or no more ECW. Sandman caning Mike Knox through the set got a thumbs up from me, and is probably what the people who go for that have wanted to do for the past three weeks or so themselves. The Outlaw, Guru, and I fall into the 18-39 year old demographic. That age area (give or take a couple of years either way) is where Vince gets the majority of his viewers; since Vince is a firm believer in having hot women associated with wrestling, I guess we will have to suffer with a nearly naked woman every week. Yes, you could add another match, or add time onto another match, plus it worries me that people would want to see a little more wrestling instead of a little more skin. I do agree that promos do take up too much time on TV shows, but talking is an important part of this business.
3) Why did Big Show become the first to hold all three federation titles and not Kurt Angle?
Who cares? Angle is hurt right now, and nobody would want Hulk Hogan in ECW to have the honor. HHH and HBK never held the WCW titles, so the only other person who would have made a good answer to this trivia question would be Chris Benoit. Big Show is doing a great job in ECW as an unstoppable monster, and until they add a TV title or Tag Team titles, or you can just wait patiently for RVD to serve his suspension, Big Show is the guy. They would need to add another hour of television to push more wrestlers and more titles.
4) How could WWE not make Sabu invincible and make him submit?
Well, he did just take an FU through a table on the outside. From what I have observed, ECW fans got to see RVD, arguably the heart and soul of ECW (though you can argue for Dreamer and the Dudleys), win his first Heavyweight championship on ECW soil against someone the ECW fans booed louder than Osama Bin Laden. John Cena is the antithesis of what ECW fans want. John Cena is "sports entertainment" and ECW is wrestling. This is why Flair got cheered and Hogan would get booed... plain and simple. Again, I do understand Sabu tapping goes against everything his character was, but this Sabu talks. Is this a new, more human Sabu? Being more human means feeling more pain. Lame, perhaps, but the truth.
5) All the Sandman does is beat up goofy sports entertainers.
I think what he is doing is hilarious. Maybe the more hardcore fans want to see him wrestle (brawl?) more, and for those of you complaining that not having his music is a big deal, we need to get you out of the house for more air. Relax. Chances are it may have something to do with being unable to get the music rights. I know Ric Flair coming out to something other than the 2001: A Space Odyssey theme would be horrible (typing that long German song title sucks), but the earth will continue to rotate on its axis. Really, it will.
Yes, Test used the ropes to pin Tommy Dreamer on TV Tuesday night. A heel cheated to win? Imagine that. It makes Dreamer look better, considering he was not in full wrestling gear. RVD did not help the cause by getting pulled over with pot in his car; he lost both belts on consecutive days. I think people are setting the bar much too high for ECW right now. 50% of something is better than 100% of nothing, and if it's too much to see, get out an ECW DVD and watch some old matches. If this upset some of you people that are complaining about it right now, don't go away mad. Just go away.
